Stopping Dog Aggression

There are lots of reasons dogs can become aggressive. Dogs are instinctively aggressive. Just to be able to survive, dogs needed to be aggressive. In order to feed and protect their families, aggression was a necessary survival trait. Despite thousand of years of domestication, dogs retain the aggression instinct, and if a dog becomes overly aggressive you will benefit from knowing how to control your pet. As an owner you need to control your own dog if he is overly aggressive, as well as know how to recognize and avoid another dog that is displaying aggressive behavior. Learn to understand the reasons dogs become aggressive towards other dogs so that you can control aggression before it becomes a problem.

There are a variety of ways dogs try to show they are dominant, such as placing their own head over the other dogs, or by putting their paws on top of the other dog's shoulder area. As they become more aggressive they will raise the hackles on their back, growl and show off their teeth. Try to make sure this stage of aggression doesn't get a chance to happen. At this stage, unless the second dog acts submissively, a dogfight may be likely. Of course you have seen this type of dog behavior many times. If you notice these aggressive attitudes, avoid encountering the situation that is making our dog aggressive.

Use the advice below, and I bet your dog will learn to start enjoying his new dog friends like mine did and lose his aggressive attitude.

  • Take your aggressive dog on a visit with you to a friend's house who has a nice non-aggressive dog. This will probably go best if the visiting dog is of the opposite gender of your dog, because dogs may be more aggressive to their own sex. It is also a good idea either at your friend's place or in a neutral territory like a park, so your dog doesn't feel like he is protecting his turf.
  • To be sure your dog doesn't lunge or act aggressive, be sure to have the dogs on their leashes at the start.  Remain far enough apart that the dogs can't reach each other, and have the dogs assume the sit position. Stop your dog if he begins acting aggressively and command him to stay in the sit position. Use lots of praise and a nice treat for a reward to show him you are happy when he stops his aggressive posture. Be consistent with your training so your results are fast and also consistent. Don't emphasize the negatives by yelling at your dog.
  • Dogs greet each other first by sniffing each other's faces, so as long as they are calm it is time to let them say "Hi". When relaxed dogs greet each other neither one is displaying teeth, growling or raising hackles. If your dog is still calm at this point you have already begun stopping dog on dog aggression in your pet.
  • Meet your friend and his dog in different places to see if the aggressive dog was comfortable with his new friend in a variety of locations. Repeated meetings with the other dog will eventually desensitize your dog from his aggressive response to seeing another dog.
  • After the dogs seem like they have become comfortable around each other, the last test would be to have a meeting in your dog's home territory. Start the final test with the dogs on the leash, just in case the aggressive dog cops an attitude on his home turf. If your dog remains relaxed, let them play together in the yard. Now that your dog is able to stop being aggressive with other dogs, you will feel a big relief.

Now you know a good way to stop your dog's aggression problems, and the beginning of him being able to make friends with other dogs.

Known for his uncanny ability to communicate with animals, "dog whisperer" Cesar Milan has amazed National Geographic Channel viewers with his capacity to transform even the most unruly dogs into well-adjusted pets. Milan, who has been interested in dog psychology from his youth, owns dozens of dogs himself and has made a career out of exploring pack dynamics. When he encounters dogs in need of intense rehabilitation, he often sends them to the "dog camp" he has established. This is made up of dogs who have been rehabilitated by Milan, and who then help train other dogs to adopt pack mentality and submission. Because he believes that most animal hostility results from lack of proper training, Milan shows loving dog owners how to give their pets the discipline they truly need.
