If your household has a new puppy, I am sure that you have been the victim of his sharp little teeth. Obvious targets are your hands and feet, any shoes laying around, and basically everything else, too.I have listed a few good ideas for helping you deal with your puppy's biting and chewing stage.
- First of all, get your puppy some chew toys to play with. He's teething, so he’s going to have to bite something, and these chew toys are the perfect substitutes for your hands and feet. As the puppy's playing gets too rough, use your hand to hold is little mouth closed. Hold his mouth closed with your hand until he stops resisting your grip. He may squirm around because he won't like his mouth being held shut-so soothe him with a calm voice and hold him still with your other hand. Using a firm but calm voice, tell your puppy "no biting". You want to use the calm but firm voice so he doesn't become nervous and continue resisting longer. The calmer he stays, the quicker he’ll become submissive. Once he has become submissive and stopped struggling, it is time to remove your hand from his mouth, and offer him his chew toy as a wonderful substitute to human flesh. Give him praise as soon as he starts to chew on the toy. Repeat this each time you play with the puppy and he will associate the positive reinforcement with chewing on the toy instead of you.Just be patient and consistent with this training, and never punish or hit your puppy for playing too rough-that won't help. This type of negative reinforcement will hurt you progress with training your puppy by undermining his trust and confidence in you. Everyone in your household needs to understand this, so you everyone treats the puppy’s behavior problems (such as how to stop your puppy from biting) with positive reinforcement. Try to make sure no one else who is around the puppy slows down the training by not following the positive training method.
- To stop a lot of unwanted biting and chewing buy your puppy, keep him in his crate when you can't supervise him directly. By not either watching or confining your puppy to his crate, he most likely will be found chewing various items around the house. Make sure to put some chew toys inside his crate to serve his chewing enjoyment needs.
- Common sense alone tells you some easy ways to stop the pup from chewing easy to get at goodies. For example, try keeping your shoes and slippers, etc. in a closed closet.
- Use another tip from Mama dog to stop your puppy from biting by letting your puppy know that his biting is hurting you. Yelping out in a very high pitched voice when he bites you, lets him know he is hurting you. Even if you feel funny doing this, it is a very effective communication to your puppy.
- I have found that when he is really biting hard, that combining the hand over the mouth with a snarl and staring into his eyes. sends a strong enough message that he will stop. Mama dogs will do this in order to get the message across very vividly to their puppies.
- You probably won't want to grab the puppy by the scruff of the neck with your teeth the way a Mama dog does, but there is no reason not to use your hand to hold him still and show him who is boss until he submits. Remember, don't stop the correction until the puppy is clearly submissive, and demonstrates that he knows you are in control.
- Playing rough games with him, such as tug of war or wrestling, is a bad idea (even though it is so much fun) because it just encourages him to bite even more. I know from experience that rough playing with my puppies always led to a lot of bloody tooth marks on my arms and hands-it was fun but painful to play with my puppy. Before I learned better, I used to enjoy the rough play as much as my puppies did, and didn’t know it potentially could lead to behavior problems with aggression.

Teeth Are Not for Biting
$16.36
“Crunch crunch crunch. Teeth are strong and sharp. Crunch crunch crunch. Teeth can help you chew. But teeth are not for biting. Ouch! Biting hurts.” Sooner or later, almost all young children will bite someone—a friend, a parent, a sibling. This upbeat, colorful, virtually indestructible book helps prevent biting and teaches positive alternatives. The companion to our best-selling Hands Are Not for Hitting Board Book, Teeth Are Not for Biting gives reasons why children might want to bite. Little mouths feel sore when new teeth come in; sometimes kids bite when they’re hungry, tired, cranky, frustrated, angry, bored, distressed, or seeking attention. Author Elizabeth Verdick suggests positive things children can do instead of biting: chew a chewy toy, drink a cold drink, get a hug, tell a grown-up. This book also includes helpful tips for parents and caregivers.
