Pet Wee Wee Pads

Chihuahua potty training?

Okay, this has been a bit of a nightmare with our 3 1/2 month Chi, who we've had for a month. He'll use the wee wee pad when he's in the bathroom and next to it, but won't go from the kitchen to the bathroom, which are next to each other, to use the pad. I've already subscribed to a Chi potty training course online, but is he just too young to get the concept of having to seek out his wee wee pad??

Also, he plays with the pad, tears it up, and leaves it in a ball in the corner so then poops and pees on the floor! How do I get him to leave the pad alone?? He's great otherwise, goes voluntarily into his crate, sleeps through the night without any mistakes in his kennel, and is an all-around great guy with our kids (I have four of them- don't believe it when you hear Chis don't make good family pets- you just have to supervise them when your kids are playing with them!).

No, he's not too young; though he was close when you got him.
Another sort of pad/litter may work better. Have you tried just newspaper in a catbox or whatever the pad is in? It may not be as attractive to scratch and tear. Some also do well with a box of litter or cedar (NOT with deodorizers like cats are okay with - something natural as they may eat some).

Beyond that.... take him to the pad more often. As often as is needed to get him consistent. Use plenty of rewards, and step back slowly so that he can be successful. Take him every 30 minutes if needed.
