Large Dog Potty Pads

My puppy hates going outside?

I have a French Mastiff and she is going to be a very large dog. She hates going outside and whines and cries the whole time. She always tries to run back towards the door to be inside. Sometimes she'll just sit her butt on the ground and refuse to move (of course I don't let her get her way!)
I continue to bring her outside, although it is quite difficult to get her to go to the bathroom outside.
I've been using potty pads for the time being but obviously I can't use those when she's 100+ pound dog.
Anyone have advice?

Don't give in to her. Continue to bring her outside and stay out there with her for exended periods of time. Eventually she will realize nothing terrible has happened to her. My puppy went through this too, he would sit by the front door and refuse to move. If I would walk away and get far enough away eventually he would follow because he was even more afraid of being left alone. Like someone here said, give her a lot of treats when you take her out, pet her a lot, and praise her, so going outside becomes a happy thing for her. Another thing I did with my puppy was carrying him far enough away from the house then place him on the ground. Since he was a few houses down he was too afraid to run back on his own and had no choice but to follow me around the neighborhood (this would also make him go to the bathroom since excercise will usually cause them to have a bowel movement). After a few weeks he was no longer afraid to go outside, although he is still paranoid of riding in a car, but one thing at a time I guess.

How To Housebreak A Puppy – Part 1

If you haven't brought your new puppy home yet, then be sure to start housetraining them from the very first day you bring them home. A common mistake that's made with housebreaking is not starting immediately and not being consistent. It's too easy to be wrapped up in their adorable little faces and ignore their training those first few days. It is important to start them off with good habits though.

When it comes to housebreaking, there are plenty of methods out there for doing it. Paper training is one commonly taught method, which I don't recommend. Paper training involves training your puppy to pee and poop inside of your house on a puppy pad or on newspapers. Then, after they've learned to do that, training them to go outside. It's much more effective to train them to go outside right from the start if that's where you plan on them going for the long term.

Another common method is crate training. This is a very popular method, and for good reason. It works well. Crate training involves putting your pup in a crate anytime you cannot supervise them. You'll purchase a crate from your local pet shop, that is right about the same size as your puppy's bed. This will prevent them from peeing or pooping in it, because if they do, they'll be forced to be in close proximity to it for the remainder of the time they're in there.

Whenever there is a time you can't supervise your puppy, such as when you leave the house, or you are cooking, working, cleaning, working on crafts, etc. you place your puppy inside the crate. This way, they learn that if they need to go potty, their body is able to hold it. It makes them realize they don't have to immediately go potty every time they feel the urge.

Purchasing the right size crate is crucial for this method. If the crate is too large, they may use that extra space to go potty in, which defeats the purpose. On the other hand, if it's too small, it'll be very uncomfortable for them because they can't lay down comfortably. The crate should give them just enough space to lay down and to turn in circles to re-situate themselves and get comfortable.

Here's a tip that will be very helpful for you. You should teach your dog a 'potty word'. No, not profanity! It is a word you use when you want them to go to the bathroom instead of playing around in the yard. Any word or phrase you want to use will work fine, as long as you are consistent with using the same word/phrase every single time.

To teach them this potty word, wait until you are outside and they are going potty. Right as they are finishing, say the potty word, then follow it up with lavish praise and a yummy treat. The better the treat, the better this will work.

Be sure that if you take them outside to play games or go for a walk, you don't say this potty word. It needs to be something exclusive to them going to the bathroom, not a commonly used phrase you may accidentally say at some other time. Over time, you will be able to tell your dog the phrase and they will do their business immediately and rush back to you for their treat, rather than leisurely strolling around in the yard while you sit around and wait for them to potty.
