If Your Children Want A Dog Remember It Needs Training

All children love pets and they would love to have a dog if their parents will let them. A lot of kids parents can only think of all the trouble a dog could cause them. Parents often give in to the constant pressure but it may take the kids some time to convince them.

Having decided on getting a new dog you need to think about the type or breed of dog you would like to get. With the type of dog chosen you now need to find where to get it from and you could get one from the local dog rescue pound.

Finally you have your new dog at home and the first thing it might do is make a mess on your carpet. Now you understand why people talk about potty training their dogs. A clean animal such as a dog will not want a mess near it's bed so they need to understand where to go to do their business.

A new puppy in a new home is sure to be feeling nervous and won't know what it is supposed to do to be good. Treat it gently at first but keep a close eye on it and when it looks uncomfortable take it to the potty area immediately. When it does things right give it a lot of affection and tell him what a good dog he is.

Your dog will need a lot of reminding and practice but they are usually pretty quick to learn things. Be very patient and don't get annoyed about accidents as they will happen and are not done on purpose.

If your puppy needs to get to the potty area he should be able to easily reach it to be successful. When he does give him lots of affection and congratulate him to show what a good dog he is. Once your puppy understands what to do he will be eager to do it right and be praised for his behaviour.

There are lots more lessons to come later but first you need a house trained dog. Your kids will have a great time teaching your new puppy how to sit. Kids and dogs can both be very patient and will practice for hours.

You can move on to further advanced training with your dog once it understands commands like sit and stay. Teach your dog how to behave on a leash and make it understand it must walk to heel at all times.

You don't want a dog that suddenly runs off so teach it to ignore things it sees or smells. All the smells around will attract your dogs attention but he must stay with you unless you tell him otherwise.

Some people love dogs but not everyone does so you must train your dog not to jump up at visitors and strangers in the street. Don't let your dog lick people's faces because some people find it a very unpleasant experience.

Becoming a dog owner has rewards but also responsibilities and you take on the duty of care when you get a dog. You must prevent it being a nuisance to other people and make sure it is obedient to you. A well trained dog will behave properly around other people and animals and it will be a credit to you and your family.

Beyond Obedience: Training With Awareness For You & Your Dog

Beyond Obedience: Training With Awareness For You & Your Dog

Beyond Obedience is a revolutionary new training program for you and your dog from one of our country's foremost animal advocates and holistic practitioners. The idea that your canine companion is a fully emotional being and acutely sensitive to your changing feelings and moods is the foundation of April Frost's original and highly effective training program. One of the most difficult aspects of training your dog is communicating your intentions clearly. Beyond Obedience is the first book that works on the way you communicate with your dog, providing you with the necessary tools to truly understand how your dog's mind works and, therefore, how you can create an effective and mutually satisfying relationship. Drawing on her extensive experiences as an animal behaviorist, Frost teaches you that training your dog should not be a tedious chore limited to exerting physical and psychological control over an animal's drives, but instead an enriching and spiritually fulfilling experience--gratifying for both human and animal. Frost discusses such essential concepts as mutual respect, unconditional love, mental and emotional discipline, and your expectations and priorities. She shows you how the insights gained from working with your dog can have positive, far-ranging effects on many areas of your life. Beyond Obedience revolutionizes dog training by addressing the spiritual, physical, and psychological needs of dogs and people, teaching them to communicate effectively through powerful techniques, including visualization and energy work, and offering them valuable insight into the emotional bonds that enrich the lives of animals and their companions. Guidelines Dogs are born knowing how to bark, bite, dig, chew, chase, jump up on one another, eliminate when they need to, and snarl when they feel threatened. It is a challenge to get a dog to suppress or modify his instincts in order to make human existence more pleasant. If the dog reverts, you need to remember that these acts are not malicious; the dog is simply doing the best he can with information he has been given about living with and behaving in a socially acceptable way toward a totally different species. Dogs can learn whatever you can find a way to teach them, so long as it is within their physical capability to perform. Dogs, like humans, take the path of least resistance; they do only what works well and easily to satisfy their needs and desires. If it is a self-rewarding move, they will repeat and escalate the behavior, whether that behavior is in harmony or conflict with your wishes. Every dog has its own point of motivation, a trigger that will evoke a response and awaken its desire to respond to its human. From the Hardcover edition.
