Train Dog To Use Indoor Dog Litter Boxes
In: More About Dogs
7 May 2009There are a number reasons for dog barking. A dog will bark to alert you to the approach of an unfamiliar person or to let you know that a burglar has broken into your home. Fear and pain are other reasons for dog barking. Dogs also bark to get their owner's undivided attention or to frighten their owner or other people.

Whatever the reason, we are all in agreement that it can be very aggravating and seek ways to stop dogs barking. It has been known for owners of dogs that bark all the time to be charged with disturbing the peace. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to stop dogs barking for no good reason.
The most effective method for stopping your dog from barking is to teach him when it is permissible for him to bark. Although a variety of options may be considered, the most effective method is the reward/reprimand technique. This technique is successful and humane.
Some dog owners try to avoid this training option by using an electronic collar, also called a bark collar. The collar is worn by the dog, which is then activated when he starts to bark. When the bark collar gives off a small electronic shock, the dog is taken by surprise. Once dogs begin to associate pain with their barking, they will stop barking. I am of the opinion that the use of electronic collars to stop dogs from barking is both cruel and inhumane.
Not all dogs realize that the uncomfortable shock is directly related to their barking; electronic collars should not be used for this reason and many others. They develop a tolerance for the electronic shocks and continue barking. In addition, if the prongs on the collar do not touch the skin of a dog with a thick coat, he will probably not feel the electric shock. In addition, just using an electronic collar to stop dog barking hardly ever works. Usually, optimal results are obtained by including dog obedience training.
Although electronic dog collars don't really hurt dogs, some people think that they could be discouraging to dogs. It is for this reason that these people choose to use citronella collars, which work on the same principle as electronic collars. Citronella collars emit a mist each time the dog barks. The majority of dogs do not like the odor. Eventually, dogs realize that the revolting aroma is produced when they bark, so they stop barking to prevent the smell. They are probably just about as successful as electronic collars.

The vast majority of vets and dog trainers believe that, although shock collars can be useful, they are no substitute for good dog training. Obedience training is effective for most dog behavior problems, not just dog barking. It also helps with other dog behavior issues.
Surgery is the most drastic and, in my opinion, barbaric option to stop dogs barking. To stop dogs barking, tissue is extracted from the larynx. It is not unheard of for the dog's bark to return, voiding the surgery. Thankfully, most vets oppose the surgical method to stop dogs barking.
In conclusion, I hope we have convinced you that obedience training is the best way to stop dogs barking. You should bear in mind that, if your dogs stops barking by using a barking collar, he will also not alert you to an intruder in your house. By providing your dog with good obedience training, he will protect you and your family but he will also understand when barking is appropriate.

Training Pointing Dogs: All the Answers to All Your Questions $4.75 What does Paul Long say about it? is the question often asked by most serious trainers. Recently revised with new photographs and format, Training Pointing Dogs highlights the sage guidance of this master dog trainer. In simple question-and-answer format, Long answers the questions most asked by trainers, professional and amateur alike.Should I try to train my dog myself? Do I need to use a whistle? How do I deal with a dog who sulks after correction? When should I breed my male dog? How do I stop my dog from barking at night without cause? What should I do if my dog will point a dead bird but not pick up and retrieve it?Paul Long's answers to these questions are practical and filled with a good sense and subtle, wry humor of a wily veteran. His answer to the last question above is a delightful example: Retrieving is a pretty sight and desirable. Elsewhere in the book you will find suggestions for encouraging your dog to retrieve. But if you have no success, remember that it is a rare sight to see a man point a bird. However, many men have a back strong enough to lean down and pick up a bird that a dog has located and pointed dead. (6 X 9, 112 pages, b&w photos) |
