Do you have a dog that is already trained to come on command? I used to always get frustrated, because I had a dog that only came when she felt like it. When your dog doesn't come do you start yelling and repeating come over and over? Here is a great reason on why you shouldn't do that anymore.This is because the anger and yelling sends the completely wrong message.  He'll be thinking the word "come" means "you are in big trouble". In fact, when he hears you call with an angry voice he might even run further away because he thinks come is the word you use prior to punishing him.

It is much better to use positive reinforcement training and get the good results you desire.The affection and praise and rewards you give your dog for good performance will teach him far better than any negative techniques.  By giving the positive reinforcement of praise and rewards your dog learns to associate coming when you call with good things.

• So that he doesn't get distracted when learning to come, begin the training inside your house. Call him over by saying "come"  in a cheerful, happy voice. Reward him as soon as he does-give him lots of vocal praise and some petting and a doggy treat, too. If any one else is around when you are training your dog to come, have them help you. For example, stand on opposite sides of the room and take turns calling the dog. Take the training outdoors, once your doggy has gotten the idea to come when he is called.

• Put your dog on his leash prior to going outside. If your dog is not paying attention to you when you command him to come,  give a tug on the leash to get his attention, and walk backwards until the dog runs up to you. After he comes up to you, be sure to immediately reward him with praise, some pets and a reward. reward him for doing good, but don't get mad if he doesn't always perform perfectly. You are now ready for the next step-trying the training with a longer leash.

• Your dog will feel less controlled by you when walking on the longer leash. So, now when you call him, he may be feeling a little more independent, having more room to cruise and all, so it may tempt him to ignore your call command. If your dog isn't paying attention, reverse direction so he'll be forced to turn with you, and then call him with your upbeat voice and when he comes repeat the positive reinforcement of treats and praise. Keep working with him on the longer leash until he comes every time you callNow your doggy is ready for a bigger test-off leash recall.

• You should start this training inside an enclosed yard, so there is no chance your dog will run off and not come back when you call. Just like on leash training, as soon as he responds to your call give him his praise and reward for a job well done. However, if he is not responsive, now that he has that additional freedom of movement, you will need to go back to the leash training and work with the dog some more. Hopefully, your dog is listening and now you are ready for the big test.

• You are now ready to try calling your dog to you even when he is cruising around outside the yard without a leash. This test is potentially harder for your dog to pass. You have done a good job training your dog to come, if he listens even among all the distractions that may be going on. Even if he sometimes isn't perfect, keep working with your dog on this-it is an important element of obedience training. The good news is you have every day to play with and train your dog, so keep if you keep at it using these positive reinforcement tips, you will have a dog that does come on command.
