Housebreaking Pads

I think I may have ruined my puppy housebreaking attempts by trying the puppy training pads, what should I do?

I have a 4 month old Beagle mix, and we were given some puppy training pads for free. Usually she goes outside with a few accidents so I decided to set one out just in case of an emergency she would go there instead of on my carpet. She used the pad twice, and then later in the day she went near it but not on it. Then I took the pad away, and then she went 3 more times in the next 2 hours on my carpet. This is not like her! When we go outside she will just play around, chase leaves, and chew on sticks but not pee. When we return inside she will go on the floor. I am afraid the use of the pads might have confused her, could this be so? Has anyone had any similar experiences with the puppy pads?

Using the puppy pads has most likely confused her somewhat, but it's not something that you can't 'fix'. Right now she thinks it's okay to 'go' on the carpet because that's where the pad was and she most likely still smells the scent of her own urine.

Puppies learn through repetition so it's important to help her 'un-learn' this new undesirable behavior and replace it with the correct one. It's like breaking any habit, it takes patience and time.

If you have a crate for her, now would be the time to be using it. You need to confine or supervise her very well, so that she's not able to continue to 'make mistakes'. Try to keep her outside long enough to do her business, but if she still gets too distracted and doesn't go, bring her inside and crate her for a little while. Then take her back out, repeat etc. The aim is to get her into the habit of only doing her business outside. If you get her back into that habit she will forget all about the puppy pads.
