A German Shepherd dog with the right breeding and the proper training can be the type of dog that you have been searching for; someone to protect your home, loyal companion, a beautiful show dog or anything else that might come to mind, this dog will be more than capable of doing. These dogs are and always will be the top all-around utility dog. German Shepherd dog training will be the glue that holds the pieces together.

German Shepherd Dog Training

These great dogs are capable of learning at the early age of seven weeks old. The puppies brain, by seven weeks of age, is ready to begin absorbing some of the easy commands, but it will take many months for his body to catch up. Teach your puppy games that he will enjoy for years to come.

Exercise can help your dog mentally and physically. It’s fun to teach tricks and enjoyable to do. Your dog will become more self assured the more he learns. Learning new commands and signals can be helpful later in his teaching sessions. When teaching your dog tricks, it best to use treats. When the puppy is older, he will love doing tricks for praise.

German Shepherd dogs train best by using positive training methods. Training your dog without hurting them is the best way. You will reach your goals faster by using this type of training. Training your dog using the positive method doesn’t mean the dog gets to do whatever it wants to do. Acceptable behavior allows them to get their reward. Using positive training gives a dog that is happy and eager. Your dog will obey you out of trust. You and your dog will become a team.

Training Your German Shepherd

Leash Training

Your dog might want to carry the leash in their mouth, in the beginning. They can carry the leash for the first few times, but aren’t allowed to chew on it. While holding the leash in your left hand, keep the dog to your left side. The dog should always be trained with short lessons. Remember, things don’t happen over night, it could take some time.

The Sit and The Down

The basics for teaching a dog to sit. Using treats is easiest with positive training. Take a treat and hold it in front of his nose, lift the treat up and back. This lets the dog fold his legs under himself for the perfect sit. While lifting the treat, repeat the word “sit”. When the dog sits give him his treat.

When teaching the down, it’s best to start in the sit position. Starting with the treat in front of the dog move it down and forward. This will lower his front legs. While lowering the treat don’t forget to say “down”. Always reward the dog after his task with treats and lots of praise.

Many German Shepherd dogs have been ruined by incorrect training or lack of training. The experience that you have in training these dogs will be very exciting. Living with a well trained German shepherd dog is a trip of a life time.
