How do you re-train your potty trained dog?

We have a dog who has been taught to eliminate on the patio of our condo (on pee pads), however he frequently misses or simply eliminates in the general area. We recently purchased the PupHead Dog Potty (low to the ground, synthetic grass solution) and we are having trouble getting him to re-learn that he should eliminate there instead. We've tried putting a pee pad over part of the grass, as well as using training odors, and he still seems to prefer to eliminate right next to it.
We also tried putting some feces on the grass, as well as some of the recently expelled urine, and he repeated the same action this morning.

Have you ever tried crate training? This method hones in on a dogs natural need for a "den" Dogs come from a wolf line, and have never lost their need to "den" Ever see your dog sit under tables or chairs? That is the need to have a den. Crate training takes this one step farther. B/c dogs will not pee where they sleep if you crate train, then slowly aclimate to the home environment, they learn that not only is the crate their den, but the whole house is! We just finally housebroke our pup. She is 11 months old. She was crate trained in 1 week (wouldn't go in her crate) and house broken in a few months (she cries at the back door when she has to go) You can find all kinds of info on-line. And the best part...you never have a pad to clean up or smell....and they end up loving their crate!

Grass for Dogs : Is it Safe Or Not?

It has been a long unsolved issue why dogs would tend to eat grass. Dog trainers and other dog professionals would disagree on this issue. The typical argument would start with the basic question, "Do dogs vomit because they have eaten grass or because they have to throw up that's why they eat grass?" Majority of dog professionals and trainers believe that when dogs eat grass, they are more inclined to throw up. Regardless of the various perspectives regarding the issue, as a dog owner you have to be educated how grass can affect and bring benefits to your very own dog.

Here are some assumptions why grass is being eaten by dogs:

Nutritional Supplement
It is known to many that dogs would prefer eating meat and its usual diet lacks nutrients that can only be found from veggies and greens which triggers urge to eat grass.

Therapeutic Nature
When your dog gets to have an upset stomach, he may unconsciously eat grass to stimulate vomiting. This removes worrisome pains and irritation out from the stomach which makes your dog feel better. Most dogs that have easily upset stomach would automatically rely on grass to drive out the particles inside his stomach. This is caused by the build up of bile inside your dog's empty stomach. Having this, your dog will need to ease it on impulse.

The taste of grass appeal to dogs
There are dogs that start in smelling grass and move to eating them that eventually gets to be a learned behavior. Typically, this happens when dogs get to sniff leftovers of something appealing and entice to consume the grass that is just underneath. If this takes place repeatedly, the dog may just get to like the flavor of grass.

Is eating grass a common behavior of dogs?
Generally, dogs can eat grass and it is a common behavior for them and considered to be safe. More often than not, they are more fascinated to lengthy, pleasing grasses or tall wild plants, specifically the ones that are being blown in breeze.

Will it be harmful for your dog if he eats grass?
It is not unsafe for your dog to eat grass as long as it does not become a regular habit and the grass is not infected by pesticides. Majority of advertised pesticides are tested to be animal safe as long as the product has dried up. When a grass gets treated, you have to get hold of the chemical company to check if its safe and if you are not assured, just don't take the risk of letting your dog eat the grass in that infected area.

You also have to be careful on mushrooms around because most of it are toxic. If your dog eats grass, you have to always check your garden or patio if it's mushroom-free.

Eating grass regularly

It is best to consult a veterinarian if your dog eats grass frequently and vomits every time he consumes grass so you know if it has something to do with his stomach or not. You should also consider the ff.:

Increase the fiber of your dog's diet so you can get rid off your dog's empty stomach and the possibility of bile buildup. Uncooked carrots and pumpkin stuffing can be your healthy options for your dogs. But, you have to be attentive of the level of sugar intake your dog is consuming if you have been feeding your dog these items everyday. You may also be asked by your dog's veterinarian to purchase fiber supplements or high fiber food depending on your dog's results.

Always ensure that you keep your dog's stomach full by giving him frequent small meals to last him through the entire day. Another good way to keep him stuffed is to offer a biscuit or any simple treat before he sleeps so his stomach has something.

This behavior can also be triggered by stress. The process of eating grass is usually caused by separation anxiety, excessive barking, fear or crying that stimulates upset stomach. If symptoms in your dog still persist, you already have to escalate your concern to your veterinarian or dog trainer. They will help you find out the causes of discomfort and provide you a therapeutic plan to make your dog feel better.

The ultimate objective of all dog training modules is to provide effective solutions to daily problems in order for dogs and owners to live amicably.
