my dog needs to ring his bell! help!?

my dog can learn anything...except how to ring his potty bell. we tied jingle bells onto a shoe lace and hooked it to the door he always goes out of. we've tried peanut butter, lifting him to the bells and ringing them for him. he can seem to grasp the fact that ringing the bell when he has to go out will open the door. how can i teach him this?? i need a good method!!!
whoops. i meant that he CANT grasp the concept of ringing the bell.

I have potty bells for my puppy too - and he's just starting to get the hang of it. Right now we are at the point where he realizes any time he wants to go outside to potty or get a stick, he rings the bell, LOL.

This training take a couple weeks. Here are the directions that came with my potty bells that I have been using with success. When you are ready to take your dog outside, snap on his leash, grab the poo bag, or whatever else you need. Then, stand in front of the door with the dog, and say, let's go outside! Or whatever else you say to signify that it's potty time. And YOU ring the bells. Then, open the door and go outside. Do this every time you take him outside.

You need to forge the connection for your dog that says bells=outside. My dog was afraid of the bells for about the first week, but I kept ringing them, and he got the hang of it. After about a week of ringing the bells for him, he began to try to nose the bells before I could get my hand to it when we were standing in front of the door. So, either I would ring them and say, let's go outside! if he forgot, or he would ring them, and I would say, YAY! That's right! We're going outside! And make all a big fuss. While your dog is learning to ring the bells, ANYTIME he rings them, jump up, make a fuss and take him outside. It's kind of a pain, but you really have to be consistent with forging the bells=outside connection. If you don't get up and take him out right away, he'll get confused.

So after some time with that, you dog will begin to ring the bells when he needs to go outside. However, if your dog is like my dog, he'll figure out hey if I want to play in the grass, eat a bug, get a stick or chase fireflies, I'll just ring the bell! Kind of inconvenient, my dog began to ring the bell like every 15 minutes! So, I put some treats by the door. When we went outside after he rang the bells and he did potty (a good potty, not just a little trick dribble of pee), when we get back in, he gets a treat!

Just remember that this training takes a little bit longer than teaching your dog a trick. It's not as easy for your dog to make the bells=outside connection, as there are many things the bells could mean, such as putting on the leash, opening the door, etc, and it will take him a little longer to figure it out. Just be really consistent, and you will see results!
