Potty Pads for dogs...?

I'm getting a dog tomorrow, and I would like to start using the dogy potty pads, or whatever they are called.
I heard from someone that when a dog pees somewhere(on grass) that the grass never grows back there. If I decide to get one, should I keep it outside, and train him to pee there?

We love potty pads. When we had our first dog we still lived in an apartment and the potty pads were our best option. Now we have a house with a huge yard, but we still keep a few inside for when she is home alone and for our new puppy to help keep accidents off the carpet. But since we moved, we found that even though our first dog was -trained- on potty pads for over a year, she MUCH prefers to be able to go outside. So, I would recommend keeping some around so the dog has an option inside, but that your dog (and you) might be happier to have the training goal of getting him to go outside.
