How do you train a dog to use a litter box ?

Hello,

I've been considering buying a dog (probably a pup since it'll be easier to train) and want to train it to use a litter box. I don't want to scoop after a dog every now and then and want help in training it. If any of you knows a way to train a dog to use a litter box please let me know.

My dog never used the litter box, he just ate the litter, so we got rid of it. It's not a cat, try taking it for a walk.
