It's inevitable. A fact of life. It happens to all of us at one time or another. Every pet can get sick, have an accident, or make a mistake: the cat misses the litter box, the dog just can't wait a moment longer or maybe it's the new puppy that just doesn't know any better yet. Yep, it's bound to happen sooner or later!
The good news is, you don't have to live with the lasting reminder of where Fido piddled on the carpet. Cleaning up pet stains, especially those with strong urine odors, promptly and thoroughly helps prevent future problems. Cleaning up pet urine properly is a lot of work, but it’s certainly worth the effort. Attacking the accident while its still fresh is the first step to getting out the stain and odor.
Gently remove any solid waste matter with a spoon or spatula and put it into a bag that can be immediately taken outside. Soak up as much of the liquid as possible with a clean dry white rag or paper towels. Do no rub.
Mix a quarter teaspoon of laundry detergent (liquid works best) with one cup of warm water. Dab the solution onto the area and then blot with clean dry rag or paper towels. Continue this process until the rag or paper towel comes away clean. Follow this with a mixture of one cup white vinegar to two cups water and blot dry, rinse with cold water. Place a clean dry rag or several sheets of paper towel over the spot, and place a solid heavy object on top - I find stepping on it works just as well if its the carpeting. This helps pull out the remaining moisture. Continue this process using dry toweling or rags until the carpet or upholstery is dry.
Lingering odors are best controlled by sprinkling baking soda onto the offending area. Let sit overnight, and then vacuum. Try putting a piece of charcoal in an inconspicuous place, such as under a sofa, to help get rid of persistent odors. If no matter what you try, you cannot remove the stain or odor, you may have to replace the carpeting or have the piece reupholstered. This just might be a good time to think about other options for your pet.
If your dog is older and having problems controlling bladder or bowels, or your dog stays indoors while you are away or at work, it’s probably time to look into a dog litter box. Porch Potty works both indoors or outside on a balcony or patio. This gives your dog easy access and helps control elimination problems. It also saves you from having to rush home to make sure the dog gets let out. Porch Potty also saves the up and down if you live in an apartment or condo. Check out the Porch Potty, it may be the answer to your problems.
