Train Dog To Use Indoor Dog Litter Boxes

We're fostering (and possibly adopting) a kitty and he's so scared! Any idea of how to help him?
He is about a year old and is a beautiful orange tabby! I fell in love with him when I first saw him. He was found as a feral kitten hiding under a store's shed. He lived for about 6 months with a woman who tamed him. He spent the last few weeks in a cage at PetSmart in the cat adoption area. I think that was traumatic for him. Right now, I have him in our basement and he's been hiding behind some shelves. He hasn't eaten, drank, or used his litter box but we did just get him last night. We have two older cats (13 and 14) but they don't want anything to do with him and are in the rest of the house. They don't seem bothered which is really good. We have small dogs and they don't seem to care either. I was wondering if we should possibly get a young kitten so he has a companion until he gets used to everything. What do you think? I think he may not have been adopted because he is so timid since he is so lovely. I think his original foster Mom may be the only one he liked.
Good job on the rescue! Orange cats rock.
Don't add a new kitten to the mix, though. In fact, be prepared for this to take several week or even longer. More than anything, he needs patience right now. Also, the basement is a great place to keep him. You can let him out for supervised "visits" in a couple days, but right now he's simply reacting to way too many changes in his short life. He has no way of knowing that this isn't just another one.
It will take time but it will be so worth it!! And then, once he feels more confident and familiar, you could consider getting him a little friend. Right now, though, he's on overload.

Many pet owners are not aware that training a pet can be so stressful. They might be very excited about owning a pet and think that the pet will naturally act the way that the owner expects them to. Training a pet to use the back yard to relieve themselves is one task that some pet owners never managed to achieve. This one factor makes pet owners begin to wish that they had never gotten a pet for inside the home.
Any type of training will require a lot of patience and time and the amount of time and effort that is required to train a pet to do a variety of things will vary because each pet is different. Some dog breeds are very intelligent and pick up on all aspects of cleanliness and if they do not, they will surely realize that the owner is not happy with their chosen place to do their business. Cats can be very meticulous in keeping their litter box orderly.
There are lots of other things that a pet owner might want to teach their pet. Some children will put in a lot of time teaching their dog to sit or roll over. Some kids will watch cable television and learn about the hand signals that can be used to teach a dog to fetch any object and they hand signals that can be used to get an animal trained so that they will come to the owner.
When there are babies in the home, the pet owner might want to take the time to train the pet to not go into a baby's room, and some parents train their pets to guard their children and stay close to them and it does not matter if the child is inside the home, in the yard or if they are in an automobile. Some larger breeds of dogs are very protective over children naturally and parents take advantage of this breeding incentive when they choose a pet for their children to enjoy.
Some pet owners train their pets using leashes and collar devices. For outside animals, they might choose to train the animal with electronic collars and invisible fence lines. When the animal learns what boundaries they have, they are typically very happy to live within those boundaries because they have been trained to do so. These animals are smart enough to realize when someone violates those boundaries and they will want to protect the people inside the house.
Some people do not have the time to train their pet properly because their work schedules are very demanding. They will usually hire a professional trainer and have them board the animal while they are being trained in the proper way to act around children and how to walk on a leash without straining or pulling against it. The pet owner is always happy when they pick up an obedient animal because life at home is certainly going to be much easier on everyone.
