What is the difference in crate training and housebreaking your dog?
I just got a puppy and want to keep him inside..I would prefer that he go outside to potty. So if I put him in a crate while I am gone will that just train him to potty inside it.
Crate = safe, confined place for the dog to be while you're out. It prevents the dog from injuring itself, damaging furniture, or tearing up the house. It also aides in Housebreaking because, when you purchase the correct size crate, the dog does not want to lie around in it's own potty - forcing it to hold it's potty for until you get home [at which time you will promptly *run* the dog outside to potty].
Housebreaking = teaching the dog to go in whatever place you prefer. Whether it be outside on a walk, outside in the back yard, inside on a pad [kind of stupid, but oh well], or inside on a "box" with a drain [again, stupid].
I highly suggest crate training along with your housebreaking.

Dog Housebreaking Training- A Necessary Lesson
While buying a puppy, you think you only have to teach it some commands and that's all for you to enjoy with it. Whilst there are a few dogs that are naturals, chances are you won't be quite that fortunate. Some form of dog training is going to be necessary. Dog housebreaking training is only one of the areas that people note they need help in . . . once the housebreaking problems are solved, you'll wish to confirm that your puppy can also follow primary instructions. If you don't have the time it takes to train your puppy, you might want to consider pets boarding that comes with training. This is something that is provided by some dog kennels. Orlando has some very good options in pet care and training that are worth checking out. Boarding and Training It can be trying when your dog has housebreaking problems. Unfortunately, most pet owners aren't sure how to deal with it. You must be quite consistent in dog housebreaking training and generally those doing the dog training just don't have the time to be as consistent as it takes. Once your puppy has been taught the basics, you'll be able to take him home and enjoy a whole new bonding experience. If your dog is having housebreaking problems, make sure you look for a pets boarding kennel that not only offers regular obedience training but which will also help you out with the housebreaking issues and have nice dog kennels.
