One of the biggest difficulties dog trainers have when they begin a dog agility training program is getting their dog to stay. The stay command is both basic and challenging at times. Neither show dogs, nor ordinary dogs, obey the command easily, mainly because it is not in a dog’s nature to remain still. So how should we train a dog to stay in a particular spot?

Dogs and children are pretty much the same; they will explore their boundaries. The appeal of the dog’s eyes looking up to you is irresistible for most, but you have to be firm with a dog or else it will disobey you. The dog has to be corrected if it tries to move after the stay command has been given. In the show dog world, it is an embarrassment to have a dog that keeps moving after the order to remain steady.

The inability of a dog to remain still has both positive and negative connotations. It is a negative because it makes it difficult to teach your dog to stay still, but it is a positive because it can be harness as a reward. Your dog can be rewarded with treats for not moving after the order and it can be permitted to run as a bonus.

Agility traing for dogs has major benefits for both dogs and their owners, whether it is a show dog or a beloved family pet. Insufficient exercise is one of the main reasons for a dog misbehaving. Agility training is a great way to make sure your dog gets the exercise it needs and deserves, and it also gets you, the owner, out of the house and exercising as well. That does not mean that the dog owner should keep pace with the dogs in running, and agility training might actually even be more suitable for those who do not have much outside exercises because after all it is the dog which will be running and not the master.

As I myself own a dog, I know for sure that giving agility training to the dog is more interesting than taking it for a mere walk. It is a fun way to bond with your pooch and knowing that you will get to watch it run around with joy, doing what they naturally do is much more motivating than the thought of being pulled around town by an under exercised over excited companion.

In short, whether as an ordinary dog lover, or as a dog trainer, agility training is a good way to get started with training dogs.
