5 Reasons for Dog Barking Problems

I cannot get the thought of barking dogs off my mind this morning. That is due to laying awake listening to my neighbor's insane pack of dogs barking at coyotes all night long. This gave me plenty of time to ponder all the many nearby dogs with barking problems, and the various reasons that caused these behaviors. Thinking about it made me realize I was in a neighborhood periodically terrorized by relentless barking episodes.

Below I have listed several of the very common reasons your dog may have a problem with excessive barking behavior . So, if your dog is suffering from one of these problems with barking too much, you are going to have to work with him to fix it. Unfortunately, the problem of your dog's excessive barking will not just go away all by itself.

  • Dogs will often begin their barking routine when they spot another dog or a stranger come into their field of view. This is just a  part of their instinct for protecting their territory and it is quite natural. The problem is if the dog continues the excited barking even long after he has no more reason to be protecting anything. When the offending object has moved along, the dog feels a positive reinforcement of sorts, thinking he was responsible for chasing the person or dog away form the area that he can see.
  • Often the problem begins when dogs  respond to hearing other dogs- or in my neighbor's case, coyotes- barking in the distance.  If your dog likes to engage in this type of excessive barking, you can train him to cut it out. Excessive dog barking  is a problem you should not ignore, especially since all that unnecessary barking is annoying for you (and your neighbors, too).
  • If a dog is feeling no self confidence and is insecure and stressed out, it is more likely that he will bark for just about any reason at all, even totally insignificant ones. These types of dogs have a lot of nervous anxiety issue,a dog will bark for no obvious reason whatsoever. These are the kinds of dogs that often  bark on and off all the time unless their masters are with them. My good friend's dog was such a nervous Nellie that it would bark if a leaf fell down form a nearby tree. Obviously this dog was the epitome of nervousness. All this barking about nothing, made it hard to be around the dog and relax at the same time.
  • Many times dogs that are really bored and feeling lonely will start to shout out their frustration with non-stop barking tirades-sort of  like they are going on a rant.  Dogs that are left all alone most of the time without attention and interaction are the obvious candidates for this barking problem.
  • Sometimes a dog just wants your attention, and will continue to bark at you until he gets it-he doesn't care if you are busy doing something else. A dog that has respect for his master and sees him as the Alpha dog, wouldn't be doing this. As a matter of fact, when you give in and feed him or play with him after he barks excessively at you for attention, you are actually teaching him that he can boss you around. Until I put an end to my dog's training of me, my Lab used to get a kick out of bossing me around when she wanted to play some more.

So, use these tips to put an end to your dog's excessive barking problems. Check out my full review of what I consider to be the best dog obedience training program on the Internet.

Barking is more than just noise. Barking is natural and almost all dogs bark. It is one of the many ways dogs communicate with each other as well as with humans. In this book, author Turid Rugaas, well known for her work on identifying and utilizing canine ?calming signals,? turns her attention to understanding and managing barking behavior. Think of barking as your dog`s language. By learning to identify what your dog is expressing when he barks, you can take steps to minimize their negative effects.
